How does a community devour 2,000 pounds of slow-cooked roast beef, 90 cases of potato salad and coleslaw and a mountain of bread rolls?
One plateful at a time.
The 63rd annual Murrieta Fire Department “Old-Fashioned Pit Barbecue” drew its typical family-friendly crowd Sunday —- locals who were served a pile of the good stuff by smiling firefighters, city dignitaries and dozens of volunteers.
I wasn’t able to attend, but a few friends did and said it was one of the best in the last few years.
The Murrieta Fire Department’s barbecue, which is now held at the Murrieta Community Center, debuted in 1948 and served as a fundraiser for the then-volunteer department in Murrieta.
In the early ’90s, it morphed into a community reunion that breaks even financially.
